After India, online pornography issue reaches UK, US
TT Correspondent |  |  22 Jul 2013

After India, the controversy about unbridled obscene images available online has reached UK with the Prime Minister David Cameron advocating stern action against pornography on internet.

In an interview he has called upon the search engines such as Google, Yahoo and Bing to block these contents, especially the images of child pornography.

Getting harsh on these search engines Cameron said that he has a very clear message for Google, Bing, Yahoo and the rest and they must have a duty to act on this and it is a moral duty.

The controversy erupted after the death of two children in Britain and later it suggested that the killers had online child pornography.

The issue is becoming pronounced in the US too where last week the where 255 people were arrested on the charges of sexually exploiting children online in a cross-border operation involving eight other countries.

Recently in India responding to a Supreme Court notice the government has expressed its inability to block the international pornographic websites in the country saying it is difficult to do so.

The apex court was hearing a petition filed by petitioner Kamlesh Vaswani, seeking a blanket ban on such sites.

The government was supposed to file an affidavit on the issue on Friday. Seeking more time for the court it said that it needed to consult with different ministries on the matter.

The court said that it is a serious issue and government must act.

“How long does it take to call the meeting of concerned people? It asked.

Vaswani, an Indore-based advocate in his petition had said that the porn material freely available on these sites is responsible for crimes against women.

In April Supreme Court had sent a notice to Information and Technology, Information ministry along with the Broadcasting and Home Affairs ministries seeking their views on the ban on porn sites.

The petition said that over 20 crore porn videos or clippings are freely available in the market, which are directly been downloaded through internet or other video CDs.
