Telephone subscriber base in India crosses 900 million

The telephone subscriber base in India has moved up for the second consecutive month after months of decline. As the latest data released by TRAI it increased to 900.05 million at the end of May, 2013 from 897.02 million at the end of April 2013, registering a monthly growth rate of 0.34%.

The share of urban subscribers has decreased to 60.59% from 60.71% whereas share of rural subscribers has increased from 39.29% to 39.41% in the month of May 2013.

With this, the overall Teledensity in India increased to 73.33 at the end of May, 2013 from 73.16 of the previous month.Subscription in the urban areas increased from 544.55 million in April, 2013 to 545.75 million at the end of May, 2013. Subscription in rural areas increased from 352.47 million to 354.75 million during the same period. The monthly growth rate of urban and rural subscription is 0.14% and 0.65% respectively. The overall urban Teledensity has marginally decreased from 145.58 to 145.54 and Rural Teledensity increased from 41.37 to 41.60.

Total mobile subscriber base increased from 867.02 million in April2013 to 870.20 million at the end of May 2013, registering a monthly growth of 0.37%.

The share of urban wireless subscribers has decreased from 60.11% to 59.99% where as share of rural wireless subscribers has increased from 39.89% to 40.01%. The overall wireless Teledensity in India has reached 70.90 from 70.71 of previous month.

Wireless subscription in urban areas increased from 521.18 million in April2013 to 522.01 million at the end of May 2013. The wireless subscription in rural areas increased from 345.85million to 348.19 million during the same period. The urban wireless Teledensity has marginally decreased from 139.33 to 139.32 and rural Teledensity has increased from 40.59 to 40.83.

As per the data reported by the service providers, by the end of May 2013about 93.56 million subscribers have submitted their requests to different service providers for porting their mobile number. In MNP Zone-I (Northern &Western India) maximum number of requests have been received in Rajasthan (9.04 million) followed by Gujarat (7.98 million) whereas in MNP Zone-II (Southern & Eastern) maximum number of requests have been received in Karnataka (11.03 million) followed by Andhra Pradesh Service area (8.47 million). In the month of May 2013, total number of subscribers who have submitted their request for MNP is 1.83 million.
