Telstra selects Ericsson Diameter Signaling Controller to meet smartphone growth
TT Correspondent |  |  08 Nov 2013

Telstra has chosen Ericsson's Diameter Signaling Controller (DSC), enabling an efficient long term scalability across its wireless core network

By implementing DSC, Telstra confirms its focus on forward planning to stay ahead of the rapid growth in traffic driven by smartphones and LTE devices

Diameter Signaling Controller is a key network component that eases the pressure of increased signalling, whilst boosting operational efficiency and increasing the reliability.

Telstra, Australia's largest mobile operator, has selected the Ericsson (NASDAQ:ERIC) Diameter Signaling Controller to expand its wireless network and meet the rapid growth in mobile broadband usage.

Control signaling is probably the most critical function in a telecom network and Diameter has quickly become one of the most widespread protocols. By incorporating DSC, Telstra shows its commitment to continue to evolve to the next-generation all-IP network, meeting the exponential growth in smartphone-driven traffic. As more and more operators deploy LTE the requirements for signaling control, both within an operator's own network and between operators, also increase.

The benefits of implementing Ericsson DSC include more robust signaling network architecture, significant CAPEX and OPEX savings, and a reduced risk of malicious IP attacks. It will also improve the use networks during peak traffic times, through load balancing and overload protection mechanisms. These improvements will help to protect against any potential network element failures.

David Robertson, Director Transport and Routing Engineering, Telstra says: "Networks are evolving from narrowband signaling to diameter signaling, and we are leading the adoption of this new signaling architecture. DSC provides a more resilient mobile broadband network. We are deploying this technology to ensure we are ahead of the curve with growth in traffic complexity while delivering superior network performance to our customers."

Håkan Eriksson, Head of Australia and New Zealand, Ericsson says: "Telstra's selection of Ericsson for this key piece of core network infrastructure demonstrates confidence in our technology and commitment to our strategic partnership in wireless core and LTE."
