Teenagers are gradually turning their back on Facebook and being charmed by messaging app WhatsApp. Last week The Futures Company survey suggested that Facebook is even losing ground to YouTube as far as the teens’ preference is concerned.
WhatsApp now has more than 350 million monthly which puts it on the top of world’s most popular messaging apps list. In comparison Facebook has 1.2 billion monthly active users. According to The Guardian, it has even more active users than Twitter.
The reason why Facebook is losing its charm among youngsters is because of increasing disliking for news feeds about the irrelevant updates which includes updates about their “aunt and her cat, or having their parents “Like” everything they post”.
Younger people prefer messaging apps because they are safer for intimate updates, picture and private conversations. That is why messaging apps like WhatsApp, WeChat and KakaoTalk, are gaining popularity.
Facebook is losing ground despite the fact that it recently relaxed rules for teenagers allowing them to manually alter the setting and share information with the public.
Facebook has justified it by suggesting that it would engage them socially and give power to their activism which is so evident on social networking sites.
As far as its comparsionw ith YouTube is concerned teens now prefer YouTube as their favorite destination on net while Facebook is preferred by 45.2 percent. 4,014 teens were interview to register their preference.
YouTube and Facebook are followed by Amazon (27.8 percent), Google (25 percent), Twitter (19.5 percent), Yahoo (12.1 percent), eBay (10.7 percent) and Tumblr (12.3 percent).
Even Facebook chief financial officer, David Ebersam, has admitted that Facebook did see a decrease in daily users partly among younger teens in the US. |
