Samsung replaces Motorola for No 3 spot in India mobile phone market

The January-March 2008 quarter witnessed some shakeups in the rankings of the Indian Mobile phone vendors.

 

Whilst Nokia continues to demonstrate its market leadership by a wide margin, seconded by Sony Ericsson. The third spot has shown some changes with Samsung surpassing Motorola to capture the number 3 spot in the Indian mobile market.

 

According to ORG data, Samsung shines out as the only leading telecom player to have hiked its market share in the Indian market during January-March period. It currently enjoys 7 % market share as compared to 5.7 % in the beginning of the quarter1. Motorola India lost market share from 6.7% to 5.9%, but Sony Ericsson remained at the same level of 8.1%. Even the market leader Nokia lost market share in India from 72.3% to 69.5% in the period January and March.

 

Samsung Telecommunications India’s country head, Sunil Dutt said that the company registered good growth in mobile phone business between January-March with the launch of new products and on roping in Aamir Khan as the brand ambassador.

 

Samsung, which has become the world’s second largest handset maker, intends to double its Indian market share by end-2008 from the present level and also plans to launch a series of new products at entry-level and premium segment to further consolidate its Indian share.
