Nokia to launch around 40 new biodegradable mobile phones this year
TT Bureau |  |  21 May 2008

In order to make mobile phones biodegradable, Nokia is all set to launch around 40 new green mobile phone models this year. Further it plans to use biodegradable phone covers and recyclable battery designs as they contain less toxic materials.

Biomaterials like polylactic acid (PLA) plastics with plant or other biomass-based modifiers if used in the mobile phone will help reduce the use of non-renewable materials, claims the company. Nokia also aims to establish the culture of refurbishment or recycling of mobile phone and its components in India.

The concept of green bins across all priority dealer centers, where the customers can drop their old phones for recycling process, also lies in Nokia’s mind. In addition to this, the company also aims to reduce the energy consumed by mobile charger when it is left in a live power socket, by upto 50 percent by 2010.

Nokia will also focus on providing awareness regarding recycling issues among consumers through its various training and awareness programs.
