MediaTek announces SoCs targeted at India’s market for healthcare and fitness devices
TT Correspondent |  |  14 Oct 2016

MediaTek India, on Thursday announced the availability of two new System on Chips (SoCs) specifically targeted towards the emerging health, fitness and wearables market in the country. The MT2511 is MediaTek’s first bio-sensing analog front-end (AFE) chip designed for health and fitness devices, and the MT2523 is designed for active and fitness smart watches, also the world’s first system-in-package (SiP) to offer GPS, dual-mode Bluetooth Low Energy, and a MIPI-supported high-resolution mobile screen. End products powered by MT2511 and MT2523 are expected to be introduced in the India market by early 2017.

Both chipsets aim to target the fitness & healthcare sector which is one of the fastest growing sectors globally as well as in India. According to the International Data Corporation (IDC), the wearables market in India sold over 400,000 units in the first quarter of 2016. The sales were driven majorly by fitness bands with 87.7 per cent market share whereas smart wearables contributed to around 12.3 per cent. With such positive developments in the country, MediaTek is using its global expertise to further reach in IoT segments like wearable technology with special focus on healthcare.

“MediaTek has always focused on combining power with efficiency and we are leading the charge in bringing this know-how to IoT products in India. With the MT2523 and MT2511 SoCs, MediaTek aims to broaden the scope of wearable segment in India to also cover health-related applications and deliver a variety of devices like fitness trackers, active lifestyle smart watches, sports and fitness bands,” said Kuldeep Malik, Country Head - Corporate Sales International, MediaTek India.

The specifications for the SoCs are given below:

MT2511

The MT2511 is a power efficient chipset that is inbuilt with an exclusive heart beat interval technology and 4KB SRAM that optimizes the overall system power consumption for sleep heart rate monitoring.

The devices embedded with this technology can access bio signal acquisition through electrocardiography (ECG) and photoplethysmography (PPG) simultaneously. It is efficiently designed on an LED boost driver circuit for saving layout space there by delivering a complete system-in-package (SiP) for wearables with GPS, dual-mode Bluetooth LE, support for high-resolution screens and a highly-efficient ARM Cortex®-M4 CPU

MT2523

The MT2523 is an ideal deal for the active and fitness smart watch producers. It consists of micro controller unit (PMU) which is an ARM Cortex-M4F CPU due to which it helps deliver high-efficiency signal processing functionality at low power and low cost with ease-of-use benefits.

Embedded with a GPS, dual-mode Bluetooth, and a MIPI-supported high-resolution mobile screen, the MT2523 is the world’s first SoC to provide an ideal user experience. It is sure to lead the race with a circuit board area that is 41 percent smaller than competitors’ solutions. In comparison to other wearables, devices powered by the MT2523 can last more than a week on one battery charge.

With these two chipsets, MediaTek is set to create a strong footprint in India’s health and fitness market for wearable technology. The advanced technology and compact design of these SoC’s make it device friendly enabling MediaTek to gain the technological momentum in the market.
