Trai to submit recommendations on net telephony within two months
TT Correspondent |  New Delhi |  21 Jun 2008

Trai member R N Prabhakar said that the regulator will submit its recommendations on internet telephony within two months. This follows the regulator receiving comments and feedback from concerned players on its consultation paper floated for issues pertaining to net telephony in India.

Trai seems to be in favour of internet telephony allowing PC-to-phone calls within India. The regulator feels that introduction of net telephony in the domestic market may help in uptake of broadband services in the country. Additionally national long distance tariffs are also likely to come down with introduction of net telephony services in the country.

There have been mixed responses to the proposed move. Operators have demanded that service providers for such services be brought under the ambit of UASL so as to ensure level playing field. Internet players meanwhile have strongly advocated the move.
