Samsung ties up with GyPSii to offer location-based and social networking services
TT Bureau |  |  28 Jul 2008

Samsung Electronics Ltd has entered into a multi-year worldwide agreement with GeoSentric Oyj’s GeoSolutions BV Business Unit (GyPSii) to provide social networking and location-based services on its mobile phones.

Under the deal, GyPSii will provide the global infrastructure, technology, operating platform, products and its branding rights to a variety of Samsung products. Further its PlaceRank technology will be utilized to deliver highly contextual and personally relevant user generated content, regional POI (points of interest) and location-targeted advertising to customers.

Samsung will initially incorporate GyPSii’s technology in its Omnia (SGH-i900) and SGH-i780 handset to allow users to create and share user generated content with GyPSii’s global user community and other social networks like Facebook.

Speaking on the occasion, WS Lee, Vice President of R&D, at Samsung Electronics Mobile Business said “Social networking and location-based services on the mobile phone are now mainstream, so we looked to emerging innovators in the industry to support and deliver these value-added services.”
