Uninor launches mobile data services across 9 circles of operations
TT Correspondent |  New Delhi |  26 Apr 2010

New entrant Uninor, launched mobile data services in nine circles including UP, Uttaranchal, Bihar, Jharkhand, Orissa, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Andhra Pradesh.

Subscribers will be initially offered unlimited browsing till May 06. Subsequently the data services will be charged 10 paise per 10 kb.

The services will be offered under two packages. One such package myconnect 9 priced at Rs. 9 valid for 3 days and allowing up to 60 MB of data transfer. The myconnect 90 package price offers 3 GB of data transfer per month valid for 30 days and is priced at Rs 90.

Subscribers will be offered free access to popular social networking sites including Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn.

“We had stated earlier that a lot can be done using the opportunities already available on 2G platforms to offer a good quality data experience and services. We make that start today,” said David Meneghello, Executive Vice-President, Marketing at Uninor.

Another unique feature of the service is that it will be supported by Uninor’s Automatic Device Setting Server which outdoes the need for subscriber to search and download GPRS settings. Whenever a Uninor SIM is inserted into a handset, the Automatic Device Setting Server will automatically send data settings to the phone. Subscribers only need to accept the message and the settings will be installed on to the handset.

Uninor has also designed a Myunninor WAP portal. MMS on Uninor network will be charged at Rs.5 per MMS.

“Uninor will focus hard on data, building on our data capabilities to launch many more exciting ideas soon. We have some solid experience in markets very similar to India with unique and successful databased applications. So watch this space for innovation,” said Meneghello.

What is the idea in introducing additional service when the basis mobile service provided to customers is atrocious. New subscribers, please watch out before you subscribe to Uninor. First lest them set right their basics before introducing additional services.
