Virgin Entry: COAI raises issue of policy not permitting MVNO
TT Correspondent |  New Delhi |  29 Feb 2008

After months of speculation, the foray of Virgin Mobile into Indian mobile space is likely to realize on Sunday with Chairman Richard Branson to make a formal announcement.

Virgin Mobile offers mobile services as MVNO in Australia, Canada, France, the UK, the US and South Africa.

Meanwhile Virgin Mobile’s entry seems to have not got down well with COAI as the trade body has now raised the issue of MVNO being allowed to offer services without clarity on policy permitting such a mode.

“As far as we are aware, the present telecom policy does not either permit MVNO or the reselling of airtime. In light of the above, we would appreciate if you could inform us whether and when the policy has been amended to allow for introduction of MVNOs,” the COAI letter said to DoT.
