Virgin Mobile entry: DoT asks licensing dept to scrutinize the alliance
TT Correspondent |  New Delhi |  04 Mar 2008

The DoT has reportedly asked its licensing wing to look into the nuances of the alliance between Tata Teleservices and Virgin Mobile for the latter’s entry in India to offer mobile VAS services.

GSM operators have alleged that the alliance is a back door entry for Virgin Mobile through the MVNO route which is not allowed in the country. Tata Teleservices and Virgin Mobile meanwhile maintain that the deal is purely in terms of brand extension and can not be considered as MVNO since there is no deal involving air time. According to TTSL MD Anil Sardana, Virgin Mobile is just another brand that the company would offer.
