TC to review spectrum refarming - Report
TT Correspondent |  |  31 Oct 2012

The Telecom Commission will have a relook at its proposal for refarming of airwaves in the 900 MHz in a meeting on Wednesday, according to Economic Times.

According to the report Trai chairman Rahul Khullar and telecom secretary R Chanfrasekhar are believed to have discussed the contentious issue in meeting on Tuesday.

In a blow to the operators like Airtel, Vodafone and Idea, the Telecom Commission last week recommended refarming of airwaves in the 900 MHz. This was in line with sector regulator Trai's recommendations.

This means the redistribution of the highly efficient airwaves in 900 MHz band through bidding.  Reserve price for spectrum in the 900MHz band had not been fixed, though telecom regulator TRAI had suggested that reserve price should be twice that of the 1800 MHz spectrum.

It may be recalled that Planning Commission Deputy Chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia had also cautioned the government on the issue of refarming of spectrum in the more efficient 900 MHz band saying that it should take into account all the implications before taking a decision.

In a communication to the Telecom panel headed by the Home Minister P Chidambaram, he also advised its members to seek guidance from sector regulator Trai.
