GSM operators' body COAI on Wednesday said that the regulator TRAI did not have proper consultation with all stakeholders on the issue of spectrum refarming, particularly its impact.
It said that the government is handling the issue in non-transparent manner. It urged the regulator and DoT to look at the issue in a “holistic, transparent, comprehensive and consultative manner”.
"COAI reiterates that no proper consultation with the stakeholders has ever been carried out by the TRAI on the issues involved and the impact of re-farming, although TRAI acknowledges that it has significant impact on live networks, coverage and connectivity for hundreds of millions of mobile subscribers," COAI said in a statement.
Analyst mason, it said, also hinted at the hike in the Tariff as the result of refarming of spectrum. It said that total impact on account of Capex, Opex, cost for deploying new towers and write-offs is estimated to be about Rs 1,15,500 crore.
Telecom Commission is leant to have finalised its response on the spectrum refarming issue and will be presenting the same before the Empowered Group of Ministers (EGoM) tomorrow.
Meanwhile, Telecom Minister Kapil Sibal today said the government will take a final decision on reallocation of spectrum before the auction of airwaves begins.
