CBI may probe into Google Mapathon 2013 controversy
TT Correspondent |  |  22 Apr 2013

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is likely to take over the investigations related to the controversy that the recently concluded Google Mapathon 2013 triggered off in India about the national security

According to reports, the Delhi Police has requested the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) to refer the matter to the CBI’s cyber crime cell as being a federal investigating agency it would be in a better position to probe into the matter.

Meanwhile taking Google India to task, the Survey of India in letter has slammed it for telling lies about its meeting with the former.

The letter said that in matters of national security any responsible citizen or agency takes necessary corrective action as suggested by the Government of India agency immediately.

“Your continued activities with implications leading to compromise of national security are objectionable and could amount to serious offence,” it said.

Early this month Google Mapathon 2013 was in news with the Survey of India formally lodging a complaint with the Delhi Police saying that Mapathon 2013 contest could jeopardize national security.

The contest held recently had invited users to add information about their local areas for its online map services

The Survey of India had argued that it had insisted on Google to stop the contest through a letter, but despite that it did not get any revert from the company. The competition had raised security concerns among the country's security establishment earlier.

Google, on the other had contended that it took security and national regulations very seriously and was open to discussing specific concerns with public authorities and officials.

“Map Maker was launched in India with the goal of making local information more accessible to all, by allowing people to add information to Google Maps. Relevant Indian authorities, including the ministry of science and technology and the Surveyor General of India, have been briefed on Map Maker, which complies with all applicable laws,” It had said in a statement.
