MTNL asks govt to foot its pension bills on lines of BSNL
TT Correspondent |  New Delhi |  04 Jan 2010

PSU MTNL has asked the government to pay for pensions to its retired employees.

“We have written to the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) saying that pension to our employees should be paid by the government, as in the case of BSNL. Both MTNL and BSNL are government-owned. If government is paying for BSNL, why not for MTNL?” said MTNL, Chairman and Managing Director R S P Sinha.

Inspite of trimming of work force under VRS, the PSU is yet to benefit out of this since it has to ultimately incur the pension bills of such employees.

Moreover the implementation of sixth pay commission has put additional burden on the firm.

In fiscal year 2009, the company’s wage bill rose by Rs 600 crore to Rs 2,200 crore mainly on account of pension payments. 48% of the company’s revenues were used to pay wage bills and salaries.

Shame on MTNL and BSNL who depend on Govt.for their pension bills. They should adopt financial discipline to get fund for this. Also Pay comissions should not be implemented for employees of PSUs.Pay comissions are illogical .They do not relate salary with revenue of Govt.

I do agree with Ashutoash. No PSU's have pension provision so MTNL and BSNL being PSU do not have give pension to there employee. For Employees of MTNL/BSNL there is no pension also.It is only for employees who have come from Dot that they have to pay pension.Regarding 6th Pay commission implementation for employees it is already given to all higer officials (group A) working on deputation in MTNL and are central govt employees so why it is not given to MTNL own employees.
