MTNL to provide broadband connectivity in JNU campus
TT Correspondent |  New Delhi |  28 Jun 2010

MTNL has bagged a contract from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) towards providing broadband services in the campus.

"Under the agreement, JNU students would be able to access the Internet using the MTNL 3G network for Rs.199 per month, instead of the usual fee of Rs.599. MTNL users in JNU would also be able to make free calls to each other soon," said Union Minister of State for Communications and Information Technology Sachin Pilot.

"MTNL has offered students access to the local area network of JNU using MTNL 3G network. MTNL will also provide Wi-Fi connectivity to the college campus, including its hostels, by putting infrastructure worth over Rs.4 crore. MTNL has also set up four additional 3G towers on the campus to ensure good coverage and service quality," the Minister said.

According to Prof. Bhattacharya, Vice-Chancellor JNU, "Academic resources such as journals containing research publications are shifting to the use of digital media with online access while new technologies were being explored to disseminate them to large research student and faculty base. The MTNL solution is designed to link the university LAN with its 3G infrastructure that permits roaming access to these resources."
