Review: Samsung Galaxy note

Why to buy:

This is one of the popular high-end smartphones in India. Its screen size is big and is the first HD Super AMOLED display phone. Its S Pen feature is amazing and is introduced for the first time. Dual core processor and a strong 8-megapixel add glamour to it.

Why to avoid:

At 178 gm, it is a heavy phone and cannot fit in pockets easily. It is difficult to operate it with only one hand. Sound quality of speaker is very poor.

Our Take:

It is an amazing phone with creative software advancements. The Samsung Galaxy Note is beautifully crafted in perfect shape and big screen. For Galaxy lovers, this is a good buy. Its more like a phablet, so cannot be easily compared with any other phone.

Detailed Review

Design:

Galaxy Note is Samsung’s amazing innovation and is surely a great Smartphone. Its glossy white and pure black colors look attractive on this device. The handsets dimensions 146.85 x 82.95 x 9.65 mm in height, width and depth. It is even known as a compressed Tablet. The Galaxy Note has 5.3 inch screen size in first ever HD Super AMOLED display. The screen resolution is 800 x 1280 pixels and the HD display really pops out from the screen. This big phone weights 178 gm and do not fits the standard pockets size at all. It is hard to operate this phone with one hand as it’s big and thin too. These couple of things can distract the customers to this lovely device. As people generally believe, “the bigger the better”, this phone stands to the saying. One can enjoy the video, images, notes, etc.

The controls of the phone are easy but the keys are hard to press. The left side hold the Volume key around its top that can also be used to zoom while using camera. The right side is given to the power/lock key and it lacks with a dedicated camera key. On its top is a 3.5 mm earjack space whereas the microphone and micro USB port is on the bottom. The back panel hold the main camera with Led flash to its next and speaker grill towards the below portion. The S Pen stick is spaced on the back bottom portion, which is easy to insert and eject. Its screen is protected with a corning gorilla glass and as its size is big it has many chances to  has in an introductory offer the phone came with a leather cover that double protects the screen. Above the screen are front facing camera and proximity sensors. And below the screen are two capacitive two touch keys with a physical home key.

Interface/OS:

Samsung Galaxy Note runs on Android 2.3.5 Gingerbread platform, but is upgradeable to Android 4.0 Ice cream sandwich version. Though, Android 2.3 Gingerbread works fine for the device but the advancement will add the excitement. Samsung has used its latest TouchWiz 4.0, which is easy and classy. It’s easy doing multitasking and swapping between applications. Just pinch in on the home screen and one can easily customize/personalize the seven home screen to their choice.

Features:

Samsung galaxy Note comes in-built with some strong features that take it ahead from other smartphones in the race. Some important features are: S Pen Stylus, NFC support, TV output, SNS integration, MP4, MP3 player, organizer, image/video editor, document editor for Word, Excel, PowerPoint, PDF and others. Google Search, Maps, Gmail, YouTube, Calendar, Google Talk, Picasa integration, Voice memo/dial/commands, Predictive text input (Swype)

S Pen Stylus is a great innovation and a solution to many of smartphone features. S Pen can capture almost everything from the phone such as photos, sounds, text, drawings and more through various input functions and allows one to edit and share it. And there is handwriting digitization tool available in S Pen for the better contents management, but we don’t find it impressive while testing.

Camera/Video:

Samsung Galaxy Note has an 8 megapixel main with LED flash light and it also has a 2 megapixel front facing camera. Note has come up with couple of good features for camera like Single shot, Smile shot, Beauty, Panorama and Share shot with which, one can e-mail or text an image to the person one tags in it. It has 4X digital Zoom and it features Auto Focus, Flash, Smile Detection, Blink Detection and Anti-Shake. When tested, the camera showed great results and the images captured were rich in colours and light. The indoor shots with artificial lights were even true.

The Video quality is also amazing. The sound/audio comes in loud and clear, colours remain sharp and crisp. It plays back the video uninterrupted/smoothly that we shoot. And even same with the downloaded videos. The front camera used for video calling functions smoothly and gives loud and clear voice to the receiver.

Call quality:

Calls made by Note were loud and clear. But, on speaker mode the sound was low and hard to hear. In high sound places such as market or eateries the sound come soft but the quality remains good.

Data speed:

The 3G data speed is fast and blazing. It delivers uninterrupted downloading, with no need to wait for buffering to complete and hassle free web browsing.

Battery:

The Galaxy Note has a 1.4GHz dual-core ARM cortex A9 processor, and it has a 2500 mAh battery, which is massive, which to an extend has done justice with the device. Battery life is good and even fair on 3G. S Pen use and applications drains the battery fast.

Conclusion:

With a large number of excellent features and functions, Samsung Galaxy Note has set a benchmark for its close competitors. The only advantage other smartphones has is Galaxy Note’s screen size. Its 1.5 Dual Core ARM cortex A9 processor and 1 GB RAM has worked well with Note. With its forceful promotion strategy, Samsung has an advantage over rivals. We consider it one of the best high end phones. We give this phone four star rating.
