Review: Samsung Galaxy Beam - The Projector Smartphone

Why to buy:

It is the only projector phone available in the market. It has ultra-bright 15 lumens projector, which has high-definition projection up to 50 inch wide. It has a 4 inch Super AMOLED display screen and 2000 mAh Lion battery.

Why to avoid:

Its weight is heavy and does not have good camera. It has 1 GHz processor, which is slow for its operations.

Our Take:

The ultra bright projector with nHD projection has out shined all its weak technicalities. However, a user will have to compromise with low Processor and RAM.

Detailed Review

Design:

The big and heavy Samsung Galaxy Beam is world’s first projector smartphone. The body of Galaxy Beam dimensions 124 mm, 64.2 mm and 12.55 mm in height width and thickness. It has 4 inch screen and weighs 145 gm, which makes it thicker and heavier in this segment. But despite its heavy thickness Galaxy Beam has a youthful design in slim body. It is steadily constructed in a plastic material which is not worth its price but definitely not bad too. With the projector lens on the top where its thickness is 12.55 mm it has volume controls on its left. And on the right side it has a dedicated projector key, the power and lock key along with the micro SD card slot. The bottom of the phone is given the space for USB and charging connections.

Interface/OS:

Samsung Galaxy Beam is powered with Android 2.3.6 Gingerbird operating system and is upgradeable to Android 4.0 ICE (Ice Cream Sandwich) version. To support this interface you have 1.0 GHz Dual Core Processor with 768 MB of RAM which has done justice to this device to an extent.

Features:

The built in nHD ultra bright digital light projector (DLP) is the key feature of Samsung Galaxy Beam. The built in projector gives you the liberty to share any of your phone content with family, friends and business colleagues. If thrown from up to 2 meters away it gives you amazing high definition display which can be sized to maximum of 50 inches. It also supports Ambience mode and Over Head Projector (OHP) support. On ambience mode you can improve your mood by beaming up an image or video across a room, whereas OHP mode supports magnification and projection of your own clicked images.

Apart from this, it has a 5 megapixels main camera with flash and 1.3 megapixels front facing camera. Dual Core 1 GHz processor with 768 MB of RAM runs on Android 2.3.6 gingerbird interface that is easily upgradeable to Android 4.0 ICS version. Galaxy Beam gives you in built 8 GB of internal memory with 32 GB expandable memory, which is quite impressive and rich. And to support this heavyweight device you get standard Lion 2000 mAh battery which performs outstanding.

Camera:

The Samsung Galaxy Beam offers 5 MP main camera with flash and a 1.3 MP front facing camera. The main camera delivers you sharp and clear pictures if taken outside with good natural sunlight, whereas the indoor shoots are bit dull but rich with colours as it lacks with LED flash light. And captures from front camera is so-so, as it can be. Though, Galaxy Beam camera is loaded with all up going features like: geotagging, touch focus, scenes, panoramas, face and smile detection. And the most important feature of this device is that it lets you share and enjoy your images and videos captured instantly through digital light projector, which I must say is a great fun.

Audio/Video:

The Sound quality on a call is fair but after switching to loudspeaker mode it drops down and one will have to focus more to listen to your caller clearly. The in built Music Player comes with 5.1 channel output that delivers good sound to your ears. The FM sounds clear with 3.5 mm headset and can also be played on speaker mode too. The phone is also capable of playing multiple music files types.

The video quality of its 5 MP camera is fairly simple. The output comes in 720 pixels resolution which can be projected in nHD from the powerful projector. The front facing camera allows you for video calling and the video quality is fair. The video player is universal and supports almost all video types.

Memory:

Samsung Galaxy Beam comes with in-built 8 GB memory storage and more to it you can add 32 GB extra memory through micro SD card space. Among its competitors it has an edge because it adds 32 GB to in-built 8GB memory.

Battery:

To play videos and images through Digital Light Projector (DLP) it requires high battery usage. And to make it more powerful Samsung has used Li-Ion 2000 mAh battery. The stand by time you get with this powerful battery is up to 710 hours both on 2G and 3G. And the Talk time it delivers is somewhere around 18 hours on 2G and 9 hours on 3G.

Conclusion:

The Samsung Galaxy Beam is all about its power packed projector. Its performance is amazing. It may be used by professionals for presentation. For a general user, it may not be of much use. Apart from it, all other features you can get in many other smart phones at almost half the price. But its overall performance is brilliant. Its battery life is good. So, we give this phone 3 star rating.
